Husky Wushu Rebuilding Community, adapting to in-person changes together

Transitioning back to in-person operations from online during the pandemic poses challenges- rebuilding or finding a community is one of them. For this piece, I adapted to the current communication climate and conducted pre-interviews and interviews with these students over Zoom to learn more about their experiences. The interviewing process allowed me to connect back to my culture and become a better communicator and writer for the story.

Bystander training offered to Seattle, national AAPI communities

The uptick in anti-Asian hate crimes in the U.S. during the pandemic fueled Asian communities to come together and build support networks and share safety tactics and resources. For this piece, I reported on an online training webinar on bystander intervention and self-defense workshops —and their effectiveness in protecting yourself and others. I had found my own sources by doing pre-interviews and research aiming to localize this national issue for Seattle readers. Through interpersonal communication skills, I learned about others' experiences and connected them back to my culture and community.

Tianna Andresen is a full-time student at the University of Washington and owner of Barkada Baby, a fashion business that sells bucket hats and stickers. For this piece, I reported on Tianna's journey in creating the business and how she uses her art and platform as a way to advocate for her community. From getting started with interviewing my sources to filming the clips and b-roll to editing all the clips together, this was a learning experience for me to think more about the story as a whole instead of individual clips.

Photo Essay- Through Nomad Boxing Club, Coach BumbleBee's Legacy Lives On

The Nomad Boxing Club carries on the legacy of the late great Willi Briscoeray, also known as “Coach Bumblebee,” head trainer of the Bumblebee Boxing Gym. The gym hosts a variety of individuals from many different cultural backgrounds. This piece reports on head trainer Manny Dunham’s mission in opening the gym and how he aims to provide children that come from underserved communities with a constructive place that serves as a beacon of hope. I conducted my own research before talking to members of this community and learned more about the community through attending the community boxing match and going to the gym in Ballard.
